my family name
i recently learned that my main colophon page is on a yale art school syllabus.
in this amazing course:
ART 6404b, The Word is My Fourth Dimension, Spring 2026.
Kameelah Rasheed.
The course title comes from the 2012 English translation of Clarice Lispector’s Água Viva (1973). This course invites us to make work that engages with text and writing and explore the artists who push us to consider new relationships to language. Beyond the page, we explore text practices across various substrates and environments: the browser, the wall, the body, the sky, and the land. We consider legibility, translation, duration, embodiment, quantum physics, and pleasure in generating and studying text-based practices. Classes include opportunities for play, discussions, short lectures, and making. Assignments in this class include one presentation, one summative text-based work, one short essay, and active class participation. In the background of the course, we slowly read Lispector’s Água Viva as a haunt in our study of those who attempt to wrangle language. 3 Course cr

i'm in week 10, titled Translation III. alongside people i never have thought my name could be next to. feeling :').
the reason i am writing about this is that i am cited only as "Yone" on the syllabus, which makes sense because i don't include my family name really anywhere on the internet. part of it is for hiding websites from family for several reasons, another part is that i've never really put my full name on an openly-published thing, so why start it myself. i had never really thought about how this might come up in a citation until now, and am feeling grateful for Kameelah respecting that. i kinda like it...
a clue
i found a page of a scrapbook at my grandparents' house which transliterates my (non-Japanese) family name into Japanese kana, as クライニイ. that's the closest i'll get to sharing it with the internet, for now.
